29th September 2009
Following an impressive day of scoring on day 1 of the 2009
African Amateur Golf Team Championship, it is Kenya that lead South
Africa by 2 strokes with a best 3 score total of 212.
The top players in Africa, enjoying perfect weather conditions
and well conditioned course, produced excellent golf in the opening
round with 8 rounds of par or better. It was Kenya who take an early
2 stroke lead with their scoring players shooting impressive rounds
of 69 from both Borniface Simwa and Collins Ochieng. Their third
counting score came from Sullivan Muthugia with 74 on the
Championship course at Dreamland.
Pre tournament favorites and 4 time past Champions, South Africa
are just 2 shots back with a team total of 214.Yubin Jung was their
best player on the day with 69 and with their second and third
counting scores being 71 from J G Claasen and then a 74.
In third place are Botswana with a team total of 221. Their 3
scoring rounds came from Stuart Smith with 71, Phenyo Lekgoa with a
73 and Diane Lucas with 73.
The Egyptian Team, Captained by Ghassan Kabbani had mixed
fortunes on the course. Mamdouh Shiekh was the top scorer with 73,
Taymour Scarello managed 78, and Ibrahim Wakid 81.
Often the anchor man of the Egypt Amr Abou El Ela got off to the
most unfortunates of starts, After hitting a glorious opening drive
Amr then leant on his driver to collect his tee peg, unfortunately
his driver shaft snapped. Under the rules he was entitled to replace
but of course a replacement driver is never the same. Abou El Ela
managed the teams third counting score with 80.
Egypt lie in 8th place after round 1.
