Farag, Ismail, Ghannam Win Spots in MercedesTrophy Team Egypt
12th May 2010
The MercedesTrophy saw a hotly contested final at Stella di Mare golf club with three Egyptians claiming the right to join Team Egypt in a "once in a lifetime experience" at the World Final in Stuttgart, Germany next September.
The top Egyptian golfers in the three divisions are from three different clubs: Katameya Heights' Ron Farag (hcp 6) won Division A with 40 Stableford points; young Shams Ismail (hcp 17) from Mirage City in Division B with 42 points; and, Golf City's Khaled Ghannam (hcp 24) won Division C with 37 points. Players competed in Stableford format with full handicaps.
Ron Farag, commenting after his win, said: "For 12 years I have been playing in these international amateur tournaments. I'm proud that my first win comes in the best one of all of them, the MercedesTrophy."

Zakaria Mackary, Director of Sales and Marketing for Mercedes Egypt, presented the prizes to the winners, along with more than 20 other prizes for the top finishers in each division, longest drives for ladies and men, and nearest the pins on all par threes.
In addition to Mercedes Egypt, some of Egypt's top hoteliers – Four Seasons, Semiramis, Sofitel Gezirah, Jaz Hotel and Golf Makadi, Cairo Marriott and host Stella di Mare – offered many excellent prizes.

In his remarks to the golfers, Mr. Mackary pointed out that hundreds of golfers from all the clubs in Egypt vied for the 76 coveted spots in the final that included 17 lady golfers. It is the third year Mercedes Egypt has sent a team to the World Final in Stuttgart.
Mr. Mackary also thanked Stella di Mare for hosting the tournament, the hotels for donating prizes, and Golf in Egypt for organizing the event in co-operation with the Marketing Team of Mercedes-Benz Egypt. Mr. Mackary gave special thanks to Lufthansa, the official airline of the event for the past three years.
Gerard Bent, Golf Manager of the Egyptian Golf Federation thanked Mercedes- Benz Egypt for having sponsored this important tournament on the Egyptian golfing calendar.
Previous Team Egypt members who played in this year's final, Nagwa Kamy, Mike Adly, and Mohamed Atallah, recalled the great "once in a lifetime experience" they enjoyed, courtesy of Mercedes-Benz.
At registration, golfers could watch some of the highlights of last year's world final to get a flavor of what is in store for the winners this year.
The weekend in Stella provided a practice round for all the participants, which, no doubt, accounted partly for the excellent scores on the day. Nearly one-third of all the golfers managed to play their handicaps or better, including 11 golfers in the A division. Also, many golfers commented that the course was in excellent condition, especially the greens.
For the non-Egyptian winners, there was another very special prize from Mercedes Egypt: a place in the Egyptian Open Pro Am in October this year. The Egyptian Open last year attracted some of the best young professionals from Europe, as well as Colin Montgomerie, this year's Ryder Cup captain. It promises an even stronger field this year. The Pro Am that precedes it offers a unique opportunity to play with some great professional golfers.
Good luck to the Egyptian Team as they prepare for the World Final.
