Report
6 of our Egyptian Junior Squad travelled with EGF Golf Manager, Gerard Bent for an 8 day trip to the East Coast of Scotland. Along with competing in 2 junior Opens at Open Qualifying venues, the group would also attend two days of the 150th Open Championship at the Home of Golf St Andrews. Here is a highlights report of the trip.
Thursday 15th July - Horizontal Rain but the first Fish and Chips!
The weather forecast did not make for great reading and sadly it was not wrong! We were greeted by rain and wind and most of us got saturated simply getting from the arrivals hall at Edinburgh airport to our taxi! A 45 minute transfer to our Bed and Breakfast in North Berwick which is situated just 100 yards from the first tee and practice putting green of North Berwick Golf Club, followed by our first and chips of the trip and the opportunity to watch some coverage of the first round of the Open in a nearby restaurant. With everyone keen to play some golf and get some links golf experience, we braved the elements and played around the North Berwick par 3 course
Friday 16th July – First Trip to the Open
An early start to catch a train from North Berwick to Edinburgh and then another through to a town near to St Andrews and then a short coach trip to the Old Course. First stop was to collect our Open tickets that were kindly provided by Alison White of the R&A. Not surprisingly we headed for the official merchandise tent and put a dent in our pocket money! The boys made the most of their day and with the PGA running a free lesson area and other games for junior golfers, along with the World golf stars, it is easy to fill the day. Despite getting back to North Berwick late the boys were keen to spend some time on the putting green and did so until dark which falls around 10.30pm. An example of their commitment and enthusiasm all week!
Saturday 17th July – Practice at Craigelaw and first official practice round at North Berwick
With a late start time at North Berwick Golf Club, the morning we spent working on their games on the range, practice area and par 3 course at Craigelaw golf club. A superb 6 hole par 3 course that creates realistic and challenging links like experiences, which we played several times hitting a variety of shots to contend with the weather. Out thanks to Jonathan Porteous, the Head Pro at Craigielaw and former Katameya Professional for hosting us.
If the boys thought Soma Bay winds were challenging the month before they experienced something truly new on the front nine at North Berwick. In true links style the front nine works away from the club house all in the same direction. With head winds in excess of 30 miles per hour, it makes for a long front nine. To give you an idea I managed my fourth hole in one, on the 4th hole with a 4 iron. The fact that the shot was only 160 yards shows the strength of the wind. The course is regarded as one of the most interesting and challenging in the region with thick rough and typically tough bunkering.
Sunday 18th – Final Round of Open and an a photo with the World Number 7
As soon as we arrived we headed for the driving range where we met Rory McIlroys manager. He escorted us across the driving range behind the players warming up for the final round and in front of a packed grandstand! I think only Omar Mahfouz enjoyed this experience – acknowledging the crowd as we walked past! We then waited between the range and short game area and had an unbelievable view of the world top players including Villegas, Mickelson, and Tiger Woods. As soon as Rory McIlroy had finished his pre round session with his physiotherapist we grabbed our opportunity to take a photo with Rory McIlroy, now the World number 7. McIlroy will compete in the 2010 Egyptian Open.
We stayed at St Andrews until the final put was holed and witnessed the winning speech from the South African Champion.
We also managed a quick trip around the British Golf museum
Despite getting back very late to the hotel, we again spent 90 minutes on the practice putting green.
Monday 19th July – more rain for practice round at MonktenHall.
Monktenhall is regarded as one of the longest courses in the area and with a decent amount of rainfall was certainly playing its full length. More of a parkland style course, it presented an interesting and varied test from that of North Berwick. After some time on the practice green and practice ground we put up the umbrellas and played 18 holes. Katameya’s Steven Burton, very kindly joined us for the practice round as its his home course was able to give the boys some string guidance on how to play the course that is used for British Open qualifying.
Tuesday 20th July - First Tournament at Monktenhall
The rained stopped but a breeze and overcast weather greeted us for the first of two tournaments we were playing in. The course was surprisingly set up of the Championship tees, making the course considerably long. Sherif Rizk was the strongest performer from our group with a net 72, quite impressive. The course is long anyway and with considerable rainfall certainly played is full length. The scores overall from us were better than fair and it was it wasn’t for a poor last hole could have been much better.Full results awaited from Monktenhall Golf Club
Wednesday 21st July – North Berwick Junior Open
With all the practice they had voluntarily done, they all thoroughly deserved some success in this event and it certainly came. With less, but the opposite wind to the practice day made them re-think their game plan on almost every hole. This was possible the best group performance that one of our teams has had overseas in recent years and it was only losing on countback that Omar Mahfouz, of Gezira Sporting Club lost out on a prize in a field of more than 80 junior players. His gross 77, net 66 was outstanding and in part was due to strong putting on the back nine. Hassan Fayed also played under handicap with a net 70. Full results awaited from North Berwick Golf Club.
Thursday 22nd July – Open top bus tour of Edinburgh
Finally a well deserved day off, and a trip to Edinburgh. A 60 minutes open top bus tour was followed by some serious shopping. Despite a late return to North Berwick we still managed some late night putting competitions.
Friday 23rd July - return to Cairo
Summary
Conduct on and off course was impressive and we left a good impressions of not only our golf but our off course behavior as well. The team presented each of our hosts with a framed photograph of Mena House with the pyramids in the background. On the golf course, as a group, it was perhaps the best performance overseas in recent history, especially the results at North Berwick Golf Club. The more exposure we can give our young players to International competition in varied environments then the stronger players they will become. The commitment and enthusiasm the boys showed was very encouraging and we look forward to an excellent season and seasons ahead for junior golf.
